It starts with a nagging tangle during detangling. You reach for your wide-tooth comb or brush, applying product, working your way up from the ends, when you hit it. A microscopic, invisible snag. You try to pull the strands apart gently, but they are fused. When you look closer—really close—you see it: a tiny, single strand of hair has looped back on itself and tied an impossible knot.
We call them "Fairy Knots" (because only a mischievous fairy could tie a knot so small), but the technical term is Single Strand Knots (SSKs). If you have coily (Type 3 or Type 4) hair, you know this frustration intimately. It is the silent killer of length retention. It feels like your hair is stuck at the same length for years, simply because every time you make progress, these knots form and you are forced to trim them off. You trim your ends, and two weeks later, they look jagged again.
While they seem magical, the cause is purely anatomical. Your coily curl pattern means individual strands spiral and turn. In highly textured hair, when a shed hair (which we lose 100 of every day) or a broken strand gets loose, it doesn't fall straight down to the floor; it gets caught in the curl of its neighbors. Friction and dryness cause it to loop back and tighten around other strands. These knots cannot be untied; they are impossible. If you try to force a comb through them, you snap healthy hair. They must be cut.
To retain length, you cannot focus only on growth. You must have a defense strategy for your ends. You must turn to End Sealing and The Baggie Method.
This is where Rooted Treasure Jamaican Black Castor Oil becomes your end-of-strand savior. Because it is the thickest, most vicious natural oil, it acts as a "prosthetic sealant." Lighter oils run through highly porous ends. Rooted Treasure bonds to the oldest, most weathered section of the hair shaft.
The "Fairy Knot" Defense Protocol: This is non-negotiable for Type 3/4 textures who are fighting chronic breakage.

The Daily End-Seal: Make this part of your moisturizing routine. Moisturize your hair as normal (Liquid/Cream). Now, apply a very small drop of Rooted Treasure to just the last two inches of damp or dry hair every single day. This daily lubricating barrier prevents the strands from drying out and starting that death curl that leads to a knot.
-
The Intensive "Baggie" Night: If your ends are particularly parched and prone to knots, use the intensive strategy. Moisturize your ends with an water-based leave-in. Next, apply a generous, thick layer of Rooted Treasure. Gently twist or braid the ends, then cover just that two-inch oiled section with a small plastic baggie or cling wrap, secured loosely. Keep this on overnight or for 30 minutes with gentle body heat.
The heavy, occlusive nature of the JBCO in the baggage drives moisture into the cortex and locks it there. By morning, those ends are plump and, most importantly, slippery. The oil allows the strands to slide past each other rather than catching and looping. When detangling, you will notice that single-strand snags are significantly reduced, and instead of a pile of hair on the floor, you retain the length you worked so hard to grow.
